AWS and Linode XEN updates

Published on March 2, 2015 by Frederik Denkens

A couple of days ago, the world learned about a new security issue in the virtualisation software XEN. This component powers many clouds. The exact details of the issue are under embargo until March 10, after which they will be made public.

We manage hosting-platforms for our customers on various providers, including Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Linode. Both have announced that they will be performing the necessary updates. In the case of AWS this will occur almost completely automatically and without down-time thanks to their live-update technology. For Linode, all instances will need a migration with downtime. As for the other clouds we manage: CloudVPS (OpenStack/KVM) and Digital Ocean (KVM) are not affected by this XEN issue.

As part of our managed cloud services we will directly inform affected customers and also manage the impact of these critical updates.

Do not hesitate to get in touch with us should you have any questions or remarks!
